At a glance
Black goji concerns Lycium ruthenicum fruit, distinct from red-goji products. Its coloured infusion is an appearance feature, not a clinical anti-ageing result or a reliable test of origin, wild harvesting or purity.

Taste and appearance
The old two-tier table describes small roughly round even black or purple-black berries, a purple or blue liquid, fresh fruit fragrance and a clear sweet refreshing finish. Lower comparisons allow less even fruit. Original berry and cup pictures remain contextual. A vivid colour is not a certificate of grade, species or a measured quantity of beneficial compounds.
The cover is the original material illustration. These images are not TeaPlain tasting samples or proof of origin, grade, age, authenticity or image rights clearance.
Grade characteristics
This preserves the earlier Chinese edition’s sensory comparison. It is not a complete verified current standard table and does not grade your packet. Plant material, growing area, processing and grade are separate details. Decorative star rankings are omitted.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare the grades.
| Feature | Extra grade (old comparison) | Grade 1 (old comparison) |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Small round fairly uniform berries without visible extraneous material | Small roughly round fairly uniform berries without visible extraneous material |
| Dry colour | Black or purple-black | Black or purple-black |
| Liquor | Purple or blue | Purple or blue |
| Aroma | Fresh rich fruit fragrance | Clean fresh fragrance |
| Taste | Clear sweet refreshing cup with a long finish | Clear sweet mellow fresh cup |
| Soaked berries | Full and even | Full and fairly even |
The old sensory comparisons are retained, not a complete verified current standard or an authentication of species, origin, food suitability or the material in your packet.
Names and origin
A research-team account and an independent original analytical study both discuss anthocyanins in identified Lycium ruthenicum fruit. The old wording proanthocyanins is not used as an interchangeable name for those pigments. The studies concern botanical/chemical measurements, not clinical benefits of this infusion; individual sample results do not establish every region’s superiority. The old red-goji-contains-none assertion, all-wild slogan and universal nutritional richness were not independently established. Ningxia is an association, not the only source or proof that a pictured berry is genuine.
Everyday benefits
The fruit pigments studied here are anthocyanins; a laboratory antioxidant measurement is not proof that a homemade drink improves sleep, vision, immunity or ageing. Choose the identified fruit for flavour rather than transfer chemical or animal-study findings into a treatment claim.
Who may enjoy this tea
For readers interested in a clearly identified fruit infusion and its colour, after checking the actual product’s suitability. It is not a sleep, immune, fatigue, liver/kidney or anti-ageing treatment.
When to take care
Do not assume a red-goji medicine interaction or a dose is identical for every Lycium species or extract. If taking anticoagulants or other medicines, show the actual black-goji product to your pharmacist before use; no interaction-free guarantee is established. If taking medicines or Iron supplements, follow their instructions and ask a pharmacist about the actual product rather than assume that all herbal drinks have the same interactions. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies and suitability for children need the identified ingredients and preparation; this page gives no medicinal dose.
How to brew
Original prose: glass or porcelain cup
The inherited method uses a heat-safe glass or porcelain cup, 1:50, 90–100°C / 194–212°F water, refilling at about one-third remaining and roughly three infusions. It gives no first steeping time. For an identified food-grade product only, an arithmetic example is 3 g with 150 mL Actual water; that is not a dose validated for every herb. Follow the complete packet instructions first. Different plant species, plant parts and processing cannot share one universal recipe.
These inherited directions are awaiting hands-on testing. Refilling changes the concentration and is not a new measured batch. Let the drink cool enough to sip; do not use a photograph to identify unknown plants.
Read the original illustration separately
Illustration: fruit in water. Use an amount described only as suitable, with 40–60°C / 104–140°F warm water, then continue infusing. No measured dose, Actual water, capacity or wait time is given. The graphic’s activating/awakening wording is promotional, not a clinical or microbial-safety claim. This differs from the old prose’s 90–100°C; follow the complete identified product instructions rather than treat warm water as a safety process.
For ordinary teaware options, see brew without a gaiwan. Keep each complete method together instead of selecting temperature, dose and time from different preparations.
Adjust your cup
Identify the ingredients and follow the actual food product’s complete preparation instructions first. Once that is clear, adjust within those directions for taste. Do not increase the dose or boiling time of unknown plant material to make it suitable for drinking.
How to buy
Check botanical fruit identity, source and maker, additives or a blend, wild/cultivated claim, condition, dates and preparation instructions. Colour and a high price do not independently prove origin.
See buy your first Chinese tea for packet comparisons.
China price reference
Undated figures retained from the Chinese edition, in Chinese yuan (CNY). No original brand, batch, harvest or quotation date was recorded. These are not verified current retail quotes, a market average or manufacturer-suggested retail prices.
| Chinese-edition tier | CNY per 500 g (one jin) | Equivalent CNY per 100 g |
|---|---|---|
| Extra grade | 900 | 180 |
| Grade 1 | 700 | 140 |
Per 100 g is an arithmetic conversion, not a quoted packet. Do not infer a missing sensory or price tier. Compare actual growing area, style, harvest, roast, weight and channel. A currency conversion does not make a UK or US retail offer comparable to a China historical figure.
How to store
Original storage method
Keep the bag or food-safe container tightly sealed, in a cool dry place protected from light, moisture and strong smells. Reseal after taking a portion and check the closure, particularly during humid seasonal changes. Keep it away from cooking steam, the dishwasher, sunny windows and spices. Follow the product’s date and storage label; no universal shelf life is established here.
The source also suggests refrigeration for slow use. Follow the actual product label rather than treating refrigeration as mandatory or a validated shelf-life extension. If cold stored, protect from moisture and food smells and let the sealed portion warm before opening; keep a small dry working portion. The inherited 12-month shelf life is undated and product-dependent; use the actual packet dates.
Origin, processing and history
The original chart labels cleaning, drying, selection and packaging. It does not establish species, wild collection, verified pigment content, absence of contamination or clinical benefit. Laboratory measurements of identified research fruit cannot authenticate the original stock photographs.
Common questions
Does a bright blue or purple cup prove genuine wild black goji?
No. Colour alone is insufficient to identify species, wild origin, source or purity. Ask for identified fruit, traceable maker and label rather than use a visual trick as authentication.
Can I move one number from this recipe into a different vessel?
Keep leaf form, measured dose and actual water, temperature, timing and separation together. Nominal capacity or a fill fraction is not a measured ratio.

Editorial notes and updates
Updated 16 October 2026. Valid original descriptions, sensory comparisons, prose and image methods, storage handling, China price figures and usable pictures are retained with their scope. Doubtful medical, ranking and exact historical claims are revised or omitted. Current full grade clauses and historical prices are not certified. Original Chinese-labelled graphics have English reading notes; no TeaPlain tasting or brewing test is claimed. Internal research and image audits record the decisions.
